Come ogni anno, alcune settimane prima del grande annuncio delle vere e proprie nomination, l’Academy rilascia nove shortlist. Si tratta di dieci o quindici titoli, per ogni lista, che restringono il campo fra tutti i film sottoposti alla valutazione dei membri dell’Associazione. Nel grande flusso di film, cortometraggi e documentari che ogni anno si sottopongono al giudizio dell’Academy, infatti, è necessaria una scrematura intermedia per arrivare a votare i cinque titoli finali di ogni categoria.
